Knee injuries

Knee injuries are very common and can afflict people of any age. Factors such as falls, collisions, overuse, sudden twist or movement of the knee joint can cause knee injury. According to the knee surgeon, prompt medical attention is important to prevent any major damage to the knee joint or the structures supporting it.

Common Knee Injuries:

  • Ligament Sprains:  Ligaments are tough fibrous tissues connecting the bones in the knee joint. Any damage or tear in these ligaments can severely affect the knee movement and result in the inability to turn or twist the affected leg. The major causes of this knee injury are repeated jumping or a sudden halt while running. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the most common ligaments injured in the knee joint.  Torn ACL does not heal by itself and may require ligament reconstruction (replacing the ligament) with surgery.
  • Tendon Tears: Tendons are the structures connecting muscles to the knee bones. Tendon Tear, also termed as Tendinitis, refers to the knee injury that results from overuse of tendons during certain activities like heavy weight lifting, running, cycling, forceful jumping etc.  Ruptured or torn tendons can cause swelling in the knee joint. Most of the Tendon Tears tend to heal with conventional treatment methods like RICE, anti-inflammatory medicine and knee braces. However, in severe cases, knee surgery may be recommended by the sports surgeon.
  • Cartilage Tears: A Torn Cartilage is most common knee injury in athletes participating in contact sports like football, hockey  etc or sports activities that involve sudden stops such as basketball, tennis etc.  The knee injury can be treated surgically by trimming or removing the damaged cartilage without causing any instability to the knee joint.
  • Patello-Femoral Pain Syndrome:  Also known as Runner’s Knee, the knee injury is common in skiers, cyclists, and athletes who tend to put heavy stress on their knees. According to the knee surgeon, the pain worsens while squatting, walking up and down stairs or hills. Depending upon the severity of the pain, the condition can be treated with methods like knee exercises, physical therapy, icing, anti-inflammatory drugs and knee sleeves/braces.
